The CHM Student Ombudsperson holds all communications with those seeking assistance in confidence, and does not disclose confidential communications. If you have particular concerns about confidentiality, please be sure to raise the issue when you communicate with the ombudsperson. Because confidentiality is so important, all communications with the office of the CHM Student Ombudsperson are made with the understanding that they are confidential, off-the-record. The CHM Student Ombudsperson will not keep any permanent records about the student or the information shared. Students can submit anonymous concerns and even the fact of the student visit or conversation with the CHM Student Ombudsperson is confidential.
The only exceptions to this privilege of confidentiality may occur when 1) there appears to be imminent risk of serious harm; 2) compliance with the MSU Title IX requirements and the MSU Sexual Harassment Policy; and 3) court order.
Substance of matters discussed in the office will always remain confidential as outlined above. To provide feedback to the dean and designees, and to advocate systems change when appropriate, the CHM Student Ombudsperson may initiate feedback about the educational climate without disclosing confidential communications.
The CHM Student Ombudsperson will create and share reports using de-identified, aggregated information regarding student mistreatment in order to assess and report on the state of the CHM learning environment. Periodic reports will be made to the dean, academic affairs, and the curriculum committee. While the information will be de-identified and aggregated, the report will track demographics, departments, geography, and other information that could be useful in assessing and improving the CHM learning environment.
